FRONTLINE Plus FAQs.

Can I apply FRONTLINE Plus anywhere on my pet?

No. You must apply it directly onto the pet’s skin, not on their hair, at the base of the neck between the shoulder blades, where your pet cannot lick it off.

Can my pet be bathed or go swimming after I’ve applied FRONTLINE Plus?

Yes, they can from 48 hours after application. FRONTLINE Plus is water fast and will remain effective even if your pet gets wet.  However, excessive washing or swimming may potentially interfere with your flea preventative and more frequent application be required.

Do I need to treat my pet for fleas even in colder months?

Yes. With heated homes, fleas can be a problem all year round inside the home.  Outside, the flea life cycle never stops in winter, it just slows down.

I live in a highly tick-infested area. How often do I need to treat my pets?

Every four weeks. Remember FRONTLINE Plus is not a tick repellent so you may still see some ticks on your pet. They should be killed within 48 hours.

There are other flea treatment products which contain fipronil. Are these products the same as FRONTLINE Plus?

No, check the label claims. Although they contain the same ingredient there are differences.  PLUS only FRONTLINE Plus contains the insect growth regulator, (s)-methoprene to control immature flea stages and provide Integrated Flea Control.

Can I share a single pipette between more than one dog or can it I buy a larger size?

To ensure your pets get adequate control from fleas and ticks use the correct pipette size and product for each pet.  Never divide pipettes between animals.

Can I use the FRONTLINE Plus for Cats on my dogs and the FRONTLINE Plus for Dogs on my cats?

FRONTLINE Plus for Cats and FRONTLINE Plus for Dogs are not exactly the same.  Only use the appropriate product for your dog or cat.  However, FRONTLINE SPRAY can be used on both dogs and cats.

I have treated my cat with FRONTLINE Plus for Large Dogs by mistake.  Will it harm him?

FRONTLINE Plus has a long established and wide margin of safety and your cat should be fine.  There is no need to stress your cat by bathing him, but if you have recently applied the product you can dab off any excess on the back of the neck with a tissue. If you have any concerns about your pet please contact your local veterinarian or call us on 0800-800-822.

I just applied my first pipette of FRONTLINE Plus.  How long until my pet’s fleas are gone?

FRONTLINE Plus will spread over the coat of your pet within 24 hours and will continue to be effective for 8 weeks on dogs and 6 weeks on cats.  Any fleas that jump onto your pet will die within 8-24 hours.

Be aware, however that the adult fleas on your pet represent only 5% of the total flea population.  The other 95% are the eggs, larvae and pupae waiting to hatch and jump on to your pets.  Pre-emerged fleas can remain dormant in the environment for up to 6 months.

Research has shown that the best way to kill fleas is to break their life cycle.  By applying FRONTLINE Plus continually you will deplete the flea population over time and protect your home environment.

My pet is already on a flea preventative, how long should I wait before applying FRONTLINE Plus or FRONTLINE SPRAY?

Always speak to your veterinarian about changing to FRONTLINE if you are using an alternative flea preventative.

Why can I still see fleas on my pet after I’ve applied FRONTLINE Plus?

If you observe a small number of fleas, remember FRONTLINE Plus works by killing these fleas as they come into contact with the product on the pet's coat. FRONTLINE Plus is not a repellent, therefore if your pet is exposed to a source of fleas in the home or external environment, fleas may be observed on the coat from time to time.   These new fleas will be killed within 24 hours. You cannot stop your pets from picking up fleas if your pet shares its environment with other pets and wildlife.

Is FRONTLINE Plus a repellent?

No. FRONTLINE Plus affects fleas and their eggs when they are exposed to FRONTLINE Plus on your pet’s coat.

Does FRONTLINE Plus treat for worms?

No, FRONTLINE Plus is not systemically active and therefore has no effect on worms.

Does FRONTLINE Plus treat for anything else other than fleas?

FRONTLINE Plus is also registered for the treatment and control of ticks and lice.

Do I need to use FRONTLINE Plus on my dog even if he is not scratching?

Yes, not all dogs or cats are sensitive to flea bites.  Some dogs and cats can harbour large numbers of fleas without being itchy.  However as time goes on they are more likely to become sensitive.

Should I re-apply FRONTLINE Plus if I see more fleas on my pet soon after application?

No.  FRONTLINE Plus is effective against fleas for 8 weeks on dogs and 6 weeks on cats.  If you see fleas on your treated pet, these have most likely come from your pet’s environment and will soon be killed.   FRONTLINE Plus kills fleas by making them hyper-excited, drawing them to the top of the hair coat before they die.  Fleas may become more noticeable, but this is an indication that FRONTLINE Plus is working.  Pets that are flea allergic or facing a large environmental flea burden may benefit from monthly treatment of FRONTLINE Plus.

Is FRONTLINE safe to use on breeding, pregnant and nursing cats and dogs?

All FRONTLINE products are safe to use on breeding, pregnant and nursing queens and bitches.

When should I start treating my kitten / puppy with FRONTLINE Plus?

Kittens and puppies can be treated with FRONTLINE Plus as early as 8 weeks of age.  Although it is safe to treat kittens and puppies with FRONTLINE SPRAY from 2 days of age.

Is FRONTLINE Plus water fast?

Yes, FRONTLINE Plus is very water fast.  However, please take note of the tips below for the best flea control results.

  • It is okay to bathe your pet before using FRONTLINE Plus but the coat should be completely dry prior to application.
  • It is recommended not to bathe, shampoo or swim pets during the 48 hours after treatment.
  • Excessive washing or swimming may potentially interfere with your flea preventative and more frequent application be required.
  • Speak to your vet about appropriate shampoos to use on your pet.

Do I need to apply FRONTLINE Plus to all of my cats and dogs?

Yes.  It is essential to treat all the cats and dogs in your household to resolve flea infestations and prevent household contamination.  If one pet is left untreated, any fleas on that pet could deposit viable flea eggs into your home environment and these will eventually develop into adult fleas, which will emerge and reinfest your pets.

Do cats get as many fleas as dogs?

Cats are often a ‘silent’ source of fleas as they may groom rather than scratch, so it’s less obvious they have fleas.  Cats also enjoy a wide roaming area where they may pick up fleas and then spend time inside with you.  If cats are not treated regularly there is greater risk of infesting your home and garden.

What if my cat licks FRONTLINE Plus?

If licking occurs shortly after application a brief period of hyper-salivation may occur due to the bitter taste of the excipient.  Apply FRONTLINE Plus at the back of the neck where it cannot be licked.

Do I need other flea treatments?

FRONTLINE Plus may be used as the only product for flea control as it breaks the life cycle on the animal and its surroundings by controlling all stages of the flea life cycle.  However, pupae already present in the environemnt will continue to hatch for several week.  To help prevent flea infestations treat all pets in the household all year round.

Can I use FRONTLINE Plus if my pet is on medication?

Yes.  FRONTLINE Plus is not systemically active and has no known interactions with systemic medications.

Can a flea bite before it dies?

Some may; fleas do not have to bite in order to be killed by FRONTLINE Plus but fleas can bite as quickly as 60 seconds from the time they jump onto your pet.
